BRIEF HISTORY OF UPPER WEST REGIONAL POLICE COMMAND

OVERVIEW

The Upper West Region is the last of the ten Regions of Ghana and was created in 1983 in pursuance of the Government’s Decentralisation  Programme. Initially it consisted of five Districts, namely, Wa, Nadowli, Jirapa/Lambussie, Lawra.

The Region  now has eight (8) Districts namely, Wa Municipality, Nadowli, Jirapa/Lambussie, Lawra Sissala West, Sissala East, Wa East, and Wa West Districts.

HISTORY OF REGIONAL POLICE  HEADQUARTERS

Before the creation of the Region in 1983 the Regional Police Command was a Divisional Headquarters  with Wa,  Lawra and Tumu as District Headquarters.

The status was up graded to a Regional headquarters when the Region was created.The day-to-day administration of the Upper West Region is under the Command of the Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police,(DCOP) Mr. Kwesi  Mensah Duku based in Wa, the Regional capital and assisted by his Deputy, Assistant Commissioner of Police,( ACP)Nana Ansomah Henneh and other  District/Unit officers in the Region. 

The first Regional Commander was Mr. G. M. Oppong/ACP from 5/9/83 – 28/3/85 followed by the late Mr.  J. J.  Abudu/ACP (28/3/85 -30/1/90) and then Mr. R. K. Sarfo-Kwateng/ACP (30/1/90 -8/3/91) and then followed by the following thirteen Senior Police Officers:

  • POLICING

At the moment the Police have seven (7) District headquarters with various Police Stations as shown in the table below. There are no Divisional Police Headquarters in the Region even though three areas have been proposed for establishment as Divisional Headquarters since December, 2005. These areas are Wa, Lawra and Tumu. Lawra Tumu Divisional Headquarters buildings .

In addition to the seven (7) Districts there are fourteen (14) Units supporting the Regional Police Command. They are RCID, RDF, RMTTU, DOVVSU, AUDIT, FINANCE, COURT, COMMUNICATION, QUARTERMASTER STORES, HIGHWAYS PATROL UNIT, VISIBILITY UNIT , ANTI HUMAN TRAFFICKING , POLICE BAND AND THE POLICE CLINIC. Currently our Regional strength stands at 880 with 24 Senior Police Officers, 675 men and 205 female police.
